Alderson & Gyde “Bullpit” Ship’s Cabin Lantern (1941) – Best & Lloyd Burner – Rare Maritime Brass Lamp

Exceptionally beautiful Bullpit ship’s lantern (cabin lantern) by Alderson & Gyde Ltd, fitted with a burner by Best & Lloyd. A rare and highly desirable maritime lamp in lovely, working condition.

This type of lantern was commonly used on ships as cabin lighting or engine‑room lighting. It features a rear bracket for hanging and a sturdy handle for carrying.

Special Features

This lantern includes several unusual and charming details:

• A small key on a chain (both non‑original) that allows you to operate the wick mechanism from the outside when the side shutter is opened.
• A triangular lock on the front door; the mechanism is seized from age, but the (non‑original) key is included.
• An enamel reflector mounted behind the oil reservoir.
• A fascinating detail: the wick tube is slightly twisted, which causes the flame to stand straight even though the wick holder itself is angled.

The burner is made by Best & Lloyd, a renowned Birmingham lighting manufacturer best known for the iconic Bestlite.
The lantern body is produced by Alderson & Gyde, also from Birmingham, making this a wonderful combination of two respected British makers.

As expected for a lantern from 1941, it shows light signs of age, but these add to its authenticity and character.
